Engineering at Composer
What is it like to work at Composer? Of course we have high standards for everything from hiring, to product, to our codebase. In fact, the Netflix culture document is almost word-for-word how we operate (thanks Netflix for saving me all that time) [1].
I'd like to write instead about some aspects that are unique to us:
1. Salary isn't the only way to make money
It's simple. We're an investing product. If you or one of your colleagues designs an amazing strategy, there's nothing stopping you from using it for your retirement nest egg.
In addition, we are increasingly seeing "multi-strategy" hedge funds provide strong, yet consistent, returns. These funds operate by employing an army of traders and dividing them into small squads with the objective of - what else? - making money. Teams that make the most are given large bonuses and more funds to invest.
Composer's nested structure makes it possible to implement a multi-strategy strategy on your own. Over time, as the product improves and as you accumulate a diverse set of strategies, your returns will become more and more impressive despite any negative market conditions that may arise.
2. We are creating an investing language
What are the primitives for an investing language? How can we make it extensible, performant, and secure? Can this language make money? Finally, can we make it easy to learn for non-programmers? This is a small subset of the types of questions you'll be asking yourself.
3. We move quickly and carefully
How many times have you been terrified to change an old piece of code because the person who wrote it left 5 years ago? How many times have you been told "we'll refactor it later"? At Composer we focus heavily on testing our code so future developers can easily make modifications without breaking existing functionality. On the other hand, we don't sacrifice speed because functional programming languages like Clojure make unit testing a breeze.
