A cautious-but-aggressive emerging-markets strategy: hide in short-term Treasuries during market stress, go long emerging markets when the dollar is weak, and bet against them or favor the dollar when it’s strong.
NutHow it works
This strategy first asks: “Does the market look scared?” It checks VIXY, a fund tied to market volatility. If fear is high, it hides in SHY, a very short-term U.S. Treasury bond fund. If fear is not high, it looks at the U.S. dollar. A weak dollar pushes it into aggressive emerging-market funds; a strong dollar pushes it into either a fund that rises when emerging markets fall or a fund that benefits from a stronger dollar. In each case, it buys the one that has fallen the most recently, hoping for a rebound.
