About

Each month, hold either U.S. stocks (SPY) or gold (GLD)—whichever had the higher return over the last 90 days. If SPY didn’t win, it defaults to gold. A simple way to follow the stronger trend.
NutHow it works
Once a month, it looks back 90 days and compares SPY (an ETF of the 500 biggest U.S. companies) with GLD (an ETF that tracks gold). If SPY did better, it holds SPY for the next month; otherwise (including ties) it holds GLD. SPY/GLD are used because they’re liquid and often move differently. Then it repeats.
CheckmarkValue prop
Out-of-sample, this SPY/GLD momentum strategy delivers ~23% annualized return with Sharpe ~1.30, outperforming SPY’s ~14% and Sharpe ~0.82. Monthly, trend-driven switches offer higher upside with diversification vs the S&P 500.

FAQ

A Composer symphony is an automated trading strategy that executes trades based on parameters of your choice. Some symphonies are similar to holding one ETF in normal conditions and rotating to a different ETF when market conditions shift, for example a 5% drop in the S&P 500, while others use complex rules with dozens of triggers. However, complex doesn’t always mean better. A simple, well-structured symphony can be just as effective as an intricate one. Learn more about how symphonies work here.
