SPY Moving Average Strategy

A symphony is an automated trading strategy — Learn more about symphonies here

About

Daily, it uses SPY’s 30‑day trend. If SPY is above its 30‑day average, hold 60% T‑bills (SGOV) and 40% Nasdaq income stocks (JEPQ). Otherwise, hold 80% JEPQ, 20% SGOV. This is a contrarian tilt: trims risk in strength, adds risk in weakness.
NutHow it works
Each day it checks if SPY (a fund tracking the S&P 500) is trading above its average price over the last 30 days, a simple trend gauge. If above, it goes defensive: 60% SGOV (very short‑term U.S. Treasury bills) and 40% JEPQ (Nasdaq stocks with option income). If not, it goes 80% JEPQ and 20% SGOV. Rebalances daily. SPY is the market barometer; JEPQ gives tech‑heavy stock exposure; SGOV is the cash‑like anchor.
CheckmarkValue prop
Based on out-of-sample testing, this contrarian mix trims risk in up markets (60/40 SGOV/JEPQ) and buys dip exposure (80/20 JEPQ/SGOV) to cushion drawdowns, aiming for steadier, tech-friendly upside vs SPY.

FAQ

A Composer symphony is an automated trading strategy that executes trades based on parameters of your choice. Some symphonies are similar to holding one ETF in normal conditions and rotating to a different ETF when market conditions shift, for example a 5% drop in the S&P 500, while others use complex rules with dozens of triggers. However, complex doesn’t always mean better. A simple, well-structured symphony can be just as effective as an intricate one. Learn more about how symphonies work here.
