About

A core 65/35 ETF-based strategy: 65% to income-focused ETFs (VIG, VYM, VNQ, REM) if market momentum is positive; otherwise 65% to SHV. The remaining 35% goes to a bond trio (BND, HYG, LQD). Uses a 5% rebalancing tolerance and a 21-day lookback for equity choices.
NutHow it works
- Goal: generate income with a mix of dividend-paying stocks, real estate, and bonds while trying to protect against downside. - Core allocation: 65% of the portfolio targets an Income-Oriented Equities group; 35% goes to a Bonds group. - Trend filter: check a short-term vs long-term market momentum using SPY prices. If the 5-day average price is higher than the 100-day average price (uptrend), proceed to the four income ETFs; otherwise, shift the 65% to a safe short-term Treasury ETF. - Income group details: when in uptrend, allocate 65% equally among VIG (dividend-growth focus), VYM (high dividend yield focus), VNQ (real estate exposure), and REM (mortgage real estate exposure). Lookback window for this allocation is 21 days. - Downside protection path: if the uptrend signal is false, the 65% is all invested in SHV (short-term Treasuries). - Bonds group: always allocate 35% equally among BND (broad bond market), HYG (high yield), and LQD (investment-grade corporate bonds). - Rebalancing: use a 5% tolerance (corridor width) to determine when to rebalance toward targets; top-level indicates no automatic rebalance, suggesting a tolerance-based or manual process. - Practical notes: all holdings are ETFs, which carry expense ratios, liquidity considerations, and potential tracking error; ensure to review ETF prospectuses before investing.

FAQ

A Composer symphony is an automated trading strategy that executes trades based on parameters of your choice. Some symphonies are similar to holding one ETF in normal conditions and rotating to a different ETF when market conditions shift, for example a 5% drop in the S&P 500, while others use complex rules with dozens of triggers. However, complex doesn’t always mean better. A simple, well-structured symphony can be just as effective as an intricate one. Learn more about how symphonies work here.
