About
A two-mode, rule-based strategy using SPY’s trend (200-day MA) and a short-term momentum cue (RSI) to switch between leveraged stock bets (SSO/QLD) with bonds/gold, and a defensive tilt (XLP/GLD/UUP) for volatility control.
In plain language, the strategy works like this:
1) It first checks if the market (as seen through SPY, a broad S&P 500 ETF) is in an upward trend by comparing current SPY price to its 200-day average. If SPY is above that average, the strategy goes into a bullish regime and buys a mix of leveraged stock bets (SSO and QLD) along with some exposure to long bonds (TLT) and gold (GLD) to keep things balanced. Think of this as “go big while the market looks healthy.”
2) If SPY is not above the 200-day average (the market isn’t clearly in an uptrend), it checks a short-term momentum signal: is SPY's 10-day RSI below 27 (an oversold condition)? If yes, the strategy buys the levered stock bet (SSO) to try to catch a quick rebound from a dip.
3) If SPY isn’t oversold, the strategy shifts to a defensive mix, buying XLP (consumer staples), GLD (gold), and UUP (a bet on a stronger dollar) to reduce risk and potentially benefit from a calmer market or hedges.
4) Rebalancing is tied to a drift threshold (about 15%), meaning positions may be adjusted if they wander too far from targets, rather than being rebalanced every day.
5) The design assumes access to multiple ETFs: SSO (2x SPY), QLD (2x QQQ), TLT (long bonds), GLD (gold), XLP (defensive sector), UUP (Dollar), and the base SPY. The aim is to capture big up moves with leverage when the trend is positive, or to protect/prepare for downside with defensive assets when the trend is uncertain or negative.
Out-of-sample, this strategy targets ~35.2% annualized return vs SPY ~20.6%, with Sharpe ~1.60, Calmar ~2.41, and max drawdown ~14.6% vs ~18.8%. It uses regime-switching leverage and hedges for faster growth with lower risk.
