About

A daily rule-based overlay on QQQ: use QQQ/QLD for growth when the market looks strong, tilt to volatility hedges (VIXY/UVXY) or BTAL when risk rises, and default to cash when signals are unclear. Uses RSI thresholds on QQQ and volatility ETFs plus SPY’s trend to decide.
NutHow it works
Plain-language operation: - The strategy is a simple, rule-driven overlay that sits on top of a small set of ETFs. It looks at momentum and volatility signals and then chooses among a few paths: 1) If markets look favorable and SPY is in a healthy uptrend (SPY above its 200-day moving average), it can tilt toward QQQ exposure and, in some cases, use QLD to magnify gains. 2) If QQQ momentum becomes extremely strong (RSI above 79), it tilts to risk-control or hedged exposure, depending on related signals like SPY trend and volatility readings. 3) If QQQ momentum is weaker or conditions favor hedging, it can allocate to BTAL or volatility hedges (VIXY/UVXY). 4) If there is no clear signal, it uses an equal-weight cash allocation mindset, effectively staying cautious. - Signals used: - RSI(QQQ, 10) with a threshold around 79 to indicate overbought/strong momentum. - RSI(VIXY, 10) with a threshold around 40 to gauge volatility regime (low vs high volatility). - SPY price relative to its 200-day moving average (current price > 200-day MA) to gauge broad-market trend health. - Optional checks around QLD when RSI(QQQ, 10) is below 30, suggesting potential for a rebound or favorable risk-reward if other trends support it. - What happens to weights: - When conditions favor growth, exposure to QQQ or QLD increases (subject to the rule-set). - When volatility rises or momentum is stretched, hedges (VIXY/UVXY) or BTAL can be emphasized. - In ambiguous situations, cash is allocated evenly to avoid concentration. - This is a daily-rebalanced, rules-based approach designed to tilt toward growth in favorable conditions while providing risk controls through hedges and a neutral sleeve.
CheckmarkValue prop
Out-of-sample edge: ~34.8% annualized return vs ~25.6% for SPY, Sharpe ~2.12, Calmar ~4.40. A daily rule-based overlay on QQQ/QLD with volatility hedges aims for higher upside with disciplined risk vs the S&P 500.

FAQ

A Composer symphony is an automated trading strategy that executes trades based on parameters of your choice. Some symphonies are similar to holding one ETF in normal conditions and rotating to a different ETF when market conditions shift, for example a 5% drop in the S&P 500, while others use complex rules with dozens of triggers. However, complex doesn’t always mean better. A simple, well-structured symphony can be just as effective as an intricate one. Learn more about how symphonies work here.
