About
An aggressive market-timing strategy that usually holds leveraged Nasdaq stocks, but shifts to long Treasury bonds or an inverse Nasdaq fund when the market looks weak or tech looks overheated.
This strategy is mostly a rules-based way to trade big U.S. tech stocks aggressively using QLD, a fund that aims to move about 2x the Nasdaq-100 each day.
First it asks: is the overall U.S. stock market healthy? It uses SPY (a fund tracking the S&P 500) and checks whether SPY is above its 200-day average price. That is a common “uptrend or downtrend?” test.
If the market looks healthy, the strategy usually buys QLD. But if QLD has gone up very fast recently, it treats that as “too hot” and moves into TLT instead. TLT holds long-term U.S. Treasury bonds, which are often used as a defensive place to wait.
If the market does not look healthy, the strategy becomes more tactical. If QLD has fallen hard recently, it buys QLD anyway, betting on a rebound. If QLD has not fallen that much but is still trading above its 20-day average price, it also stays with QLD.
Otherwise, when conditions look weak, it compares two defensive choices: QID and TLT. QID is designed to rise when the Nasdaq-100 falls, so it is a bearish bet against big tech. TLT is the bond option. The strategy picks whichever of those two has been acting stronger lately.
Out-of-sample edge: ~42.6% annualized vs ~19.5% S&P; Calmar ~1.03 over 1,505 days. Strong upside with hedges (rotate to bonds or inverse Nasdaq in weak markets). Drawdowns ~41% vs ~19% for S&P, but risk is managed.
