A daily tactical strategy that buys a volatility hedge when markets look overheated, buys tech after sharp selloffs, and otherwise rotates among SVOL, the total stock market, or a defensive fund.

This strategy checks the market every day and asks: is it too euphoric, too beaten down, or fairly normal? If big U.S. stock indexes have risen unusually fast, it buys VXX, a fund that tends to rise when market fear jumps. If tech stocks have fallen unusually hard, it buys XLK, a technology fund, looking for a rebound. Otherwise, it chooses between SVOL and VTI based on recent strength—but only if SVOL itself is trending up. If not, it hides in BTAL, a more defensive fund.

Some symphonies are similar to holding one ETF in normal conditions and rotating to a different ETF when market conditions shift, for example a 5% drop in the S&P 500, while others use complex rules with dozens of triggers. However, complex doesn’t always mean better. A simple, well-structured symphony can be just as effective as an intricate one. Learn more about how symphonies work here.
