About
A monthly momentum strategy that ranks AAPL, MSFT, NVDA, and TSLA by their 10-period moving-average return and invests entirely in the top-ranked stock each month.
Here’s how it works in plain language:
- On the first day of every month, evaluate four popular stocks: AAPL, MSFT, NVDA, and TSLA.
- For each stock, look at its recent price Changes over the last 10 price points and compute their average change. This is the moving-average-return score.
- Compare the four scores and pick the one with the highest score (the stock with the strongest recent uptrend).
- Put all your available cash into that single stock (since only one stock is chosen, you end up with 100% in that stock for the month).
- Next month, repeat the process from scratch and adjust the position if another stock has the strongest momentum.
- If no stock stands out (tie or very weak momentum), the system would default to holding cash or the equal-weighting rule would apply, but with the top-1 filter, you’d typically still end up in the top stock.
Notes for a layperson:
- The “moving-average-return” is a simple way to measure trend direction and strength over recent history.
- The strategy favors stocks that have been climbing recently and discards those without a clear uptrend.
- Because it invests in just one stock at a time, it is a straightforward, easy-to-understand approach but comes with concentration risk.
Capture stronger upside with a simple monthly momentum play on four mega-caps. Out-of-sample annualized return ~80% vs ~22% for the S&P, with a higher risk-adjusted Sharpe (~1.34 vs ~1.30). Note: larger drawdowns (~46% vs ~19%).
