About
A daily momentum rule: go long GLD only when GLD’s short-, mid-, and long-term moving-average signals all show GLD is trending up; otherwise move to SHV (short Treasuries) for safety.
- Every day, check GLD’s price momentum using moving averages.
- First check: is the short-term momentum (24-day average) higher than the intermediate momentum (60-day average)?
- If yes, check whether the intermediate momentum (60-day average) is higher than a longer-term momentum (150-day average).
- If yes, check whether the long-term momentum (200-day average) is higher than an even longer term (350-day average).
- If all three checks are true, the strategy holds GLD (gold).
- If any check fails, the strategy shifts to SHV (short Treasury bonds), a cash-like safety asset.
- Rebalance happens daily, so the allocation can switch quickly between GLD and SHV.
- GLD = SPDR Gold Shares. SHV = iShares Short Treasury Bond ETF.
Out-of-sample: ~33% annualized return vs ~22.5% for S&P, Sharpe ~1.96 vs ~1.41, max drawdown ~10% vs ~19%, Calmar ~3.21, and beta near zero. A momentum rule that benefits from gold uptrends while limiting downside.
