About

A monthly ETF-rotation strategy: if SPY is above its 120-day moving average, invest in IVW; otherwise, rank MTUM, QUAL, RPV, VBR, USMV by 21-day cumulative return and invest in the top 3 equally, with cash kept in equal weight to the selections.
NutHow it works
Here’s how it works in plain language: 1) Each month, the strategy looks at the big-market trend using SPY (the S&P 500 ETF) and asks: is SPY above its 120-day average? If yes, the plan is to invest in Growth stocks via IVW (iShares S&P 500 Growth ETF). 2) If SPY is not above its 120-day average (the market trend is softer), the strategy switches to a broader “Factor Surf” approach. It looks at five factor ETFs (MTUM for momentum, QUAL for quality, RPV for value, VBR for small-cap value, and USMV for low volatility). It checks how each has performed over the last 21 days and ranks them by their cumulative return. It then picks the top 3 and invests in those three, with equal weights among them (and a cash bucket kept equal to the assets in the group). 3) All allocations are reset and rebalanced at the start of each month. 4) The tickers you’ll see are real ETFs tracking different investment styles: IVW = Growth, MTUM = Momentum, QUAL = Quality, RPV = Pure Value, VBR = Small-Cap Value, USMV = Low Volatility. SPY is the broad-market ETF used for the trend signal. 5) “wt-cash-equal” means you’re not putting all your money into one ETF; you’re dividing it equally among the chosen assets (and a cash bucket) to maintain balanced exposure. In short: if the market looks strong, buy growth. If the market looks weaker, rotate into the top 3 of a curated set of factor ETFs based on recent performance, and rebalance every month.
CheckmarkValue prop
Out-of-sample edge: 24.13% annualized return vs SPY’s 22.87%, beta ~0.98, Sharpe ~1.38, Calmar ~1.28. Two-path approach: growth when trend is strong, else top-3 factor ETFs with equal weights—monthly rebalancing for steady, risk-adjusted gains.

FAQ

A Composer symphony is an automated trading strategy that executes trades based on parameters of your choice. Some symphonies are similar to holding one ETF in normal conditions and rotating to a different ETF when market conditions shift, for example a 5% drop in the S&P 500, while others use complex rules with dozens of triggers. However, complex doesn’t always mean better. A simple, well-structured symphony can be just as effective as an intricate one. Learn more about how symphonies work here.
