A quarterly market-timing strategy: if the bond market looks healthy, it buys the 2 strongest recent ETFs from a stock/bond mix; if not, it hides in U.S. Treasury bonds.

Every 3 months, the strategy first checks the bond market’s mood: if broad bonds (BND) have done better than very short-term Treasury bills (BIL) over the last 60 days, it assumes investors are comfortable taking risk. In that case, it buys the 2 strongest performers from the last 90 days among MDY, QQQ, SHY, UPRO, and TQQQ, splitting money evenly. If not, it moves everything into IEF, a fund of medium-term U.S. government bonds.

Some symphonies are similar to holding one ETF in normal conditions and rotating to a different ETF when market conditions shift, for example a 5% drop in the S&P 500, while others use complex rules with dozens of triggers. However, complex doesn’t always mean better. A simple, well-structured symphony can be just as effective as an intricate one. Learn more about how symphonies work here.
