Each month, the strategy first checks whether the biggest U.S. stocks are generally rising, using XLG, a fund built from about 50 mega-cap companies. If that market backdrop looks positive on short-, medium-, or longer-term readings, it buys the 4 strongest stocks from a high-growth list, based on their last 90 days of performance. If all 3 market readings look weak, it shifts into more defensive stocks like Walmart, Johnson & Johnson, Coca-Cola, and Duke Energy, leaning most on the names that have been strongest very recently.
