About

A daily, volatility-aware tactical allocation: using SPY momentum and volatility signals to tilt between VIXM (volatility hedge), SPXL (levered equity), UVXY (volatility spike play), and BIL (cash). Designed to hedge rising volatility, chase upside in a constructive market, and keep some safety in cash.
NutHow it works
- Every day, the strategy plans where to put money among a small set of ETFs. It uses a cash-equivalent wrapper so it doesn’t overcommit to risk assets. - It has a Vol Check module that looks at momentum in two places: broad-market momentum (SPY) and volatility momentum (UVXY/VIX-related). - If the broad market momentum (SPY over 21 days) is not too weak (RSI above about 30), it considers a volatility-focused position using VIXM, but only if VIXM itself shows positive momentum (a moving-average-return signal). If that volatility signal isn’t favorable, it instead leans into a leveraged equity bet (SPXL). - Separately, if UVXY shows very high momentum (RSI over about 65), the strategy prefers a volatility-exposure path (likely UVXY), otherwise it falls back to a safer cash-like position (BIL). - The intent is to tilt toward volatility hedges when volatility looks like it may rise, toward leveraged equities when the market looks constructive, and toward cash when signals are weak. - Tickers involved and what they represent: SPY (broad market), SPXL (3x leveraged long S&P 500), VIXM (mid-term volatility futures ETF), UVXY (short-term leveraged volatility ETF), BIL (short-term Treasuries as cash proxy). The rule set combines momentum on SPY and volatility signals to choose among these exposures, with daily rebalancing and an emphasis on cash-equivalent treatment.
CheckmarkValue prop
Out-of-sample edge: Sharpe 1.01, 31.3% annual return, 5.32% max drawdown, Calmar 5.89. A cash-wrapped, volatility-aware tilt that hedges volatility and captures upside, aiming for better risk-adjusted returns than the S&P 500.

FAQ

A Composer symphony is an automated trading strategy that executes trades based on parameters of your choice. Some symphonies are similar to holding one ETF in normal conditions and rotating to a different ETF when market conditions shift, for example a 5% drop in the S&P 500, while others use complex rules with dozens of triggers. However, complex doesn’t always mean better. A simple, well-structured symphony can be just as effective as an intricate one. Learn more about how symphonies work here.
