About
A tactical “buy vol when it’s cheap” overlay. In uptrends, if many assets look overheated, buy UVXY/VIXY (unless vol is overheated). Otherwise rotate among tech/oil or go defensive (bonds/low‑vol) using a SPY trend filter and short‑term hot/cold signals.
1) First ask: is the stock market in an uptrend? (SPY above its 200‑day average).
2) If yes and many areas look “too hot” short‑term, buy volatility (UVXY/VIXY) as insurance—unless vol itself is already hot; then use tech/oil instead.
3) If not, rotate into QQQ, momentum, or defensive bond/low‑vol funds.
RSI is a simple hot/cold gauge: ~80+ very hot, ~30 very cold.
Out-of-sample performance is compelling: ~47% annualized return vs SPY ~24%, Sharpe ~2.62 vs ~2.05, Calmar ~6.85, and beta ~0.34. This volatility-overlay strategy aims for far higher risk-adjusted gains with much less market sensitivity than the S&P 500.
