What is SSLY?

The Syntax Stratified SmallCap ETF (the Fund ) seeks to provide investment results that, before expenses, track the performance of the Syntax Stratified SmallCap Index. The Index, which was created by Syntax LLC, an affiliate of the Fund s investment Advisor, is the Stratified Weight version of the widely used S&P SmallCap 600 Index and holds the same constituents as the S&P SmallCap 600 Index. Although the S&P SmallCap 600 Index seeks to measure the small cap segment of the US equity market, it may include some constituent stocks of companies that may be considered small, medium and large capitalization companies. Stratified Weight refers to the weighting methodology of the Index and is the method by which Syntax diversifies its indices by hierarchically grouping and distributing the weight of constituent companies that share Related Business Risks. Related Business Risk occurs when two or more companies earnings are affected by the same fundamental drivers (e.g. the product/ services the company makes/provides, the customers or end users the company sells to, or the inputs that it utilizes to make its product or service).

What is ETF correlation?

Correlation is a measure of the strength of the relationship between two ETFs. It quantifies the degree to which prices of the two ETFs typically move together.

Here, correlation is measured over the past year with the Pearson correlation coefficient (Pearon’s r), which ranges from -1 to 1.

Using ETF correlations in portfolio and strategy construction

ETF correlations can help you create investing strategies and portfolios. Use them to:

  • Build a diversified portfolio from uncorrelated or inversely correlated ETFs with the aim of minimizing portfolio risk.
  • Compare correlated or related ETFs to find one with a lower expense ratio or higher trading volume.
  • Create an investing strategy that hedges an ETF with an uncorrelated or inversely correlated ETF.
