What is FTXN?

The First Trust Nasdaq Oil & Gas ETF is an exchange-traded fund. The investment objective of the Fund is to seek investment results that correspond generally to the price and yield, before fees and expenses, of an equity index called the Nasdaq US Smart Oil & Gas Index. The Nasdaq US Smart Sector Index Family tracks a number of United States (US) economic sectors and selects securities for each sector based upon liquidity and then ranks the securities based on a three factor methodology incorporating volatility, value and growth. The Nasdaq US Smart Sector Index Family is a modified factor weighted index. The value of the Index equals the aggregate value of the Index share weights, also known as the Index Shares, of each of the Index Securities multiplied by each such security s Last Sale Price, and divided by the divisor of the Index. The divisor serves the purpose of scaling such aggregate value to a lower order of magnitude which is more desirable for reporting purposes. The Indexes began on July 8, 2016 at a base value of 1000. Index eligibility is limited to specific security types only. The security types eligible for the Index include common stocks, ordinary shares, depositary receipts (both American and Global), depositary shares, shares of beneficial interest or limited partnership interests and tracking stocks.

What is ETF correlation?

Correlation is a measure of the strength of the relationship between two ETFs. It quantifies the degree to which prices of the two ETFs typically move together.

Here, correlation is measured over the past year with the Pearson correlation coefficient (Pearon’s r), which ranges from -1 to 1.

Using ETF correlations in portfolio and strategy construction

ETF correlations can help you create investing strategies and portfolios. Use them to:

  • Build a diversified portfolio from uncorrelated or inversely correlated ETFs with the aim of minimizing portfolio risk.
  • Compare correlated or related ETFs to find one with a lower expense ratio or higher trading volume.
  • Create an investing strategy that hedges an ETF with an uncorrelated or inversely correlated ETF.
