What is BUFD?

The investment objective of the FT Cboe Vest Fund of Deep Buffer ETFs is to seek to provide investors with capital appreciation. The Fund seeks to achieve its investment objective by providing investors with US large cap equity market exposure while limiting downside risk through a laddered portfolio of four FT Cboe Vest U.S. Equity Deep Buffer ETFs ("Underlying ETFs"). Under normal market conditions the Fund will invest substantially all of its assets in the Underlying ETFs, which seek to provide investors with returns (before fees, expenses and taxes) that match the price return of the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust ("SPY"), up to a predetermined upside cap, while providing a buffer against losses between -5% and -30% (before fees, expenses and taxes) of SPY, over a defined one-year period. Unlike the Underlying ETFs the Fund itself does not pursue a defined outcome strategy. The buffer is only provided by the Underlying ETFs and the Fund itself does not provide any stated buffer against losses. In order to understand the Funds strategy and risks, it is important to understand the strategies and risks of the Underlying ETFs.

What is ETF correlation?

Correlation is a measure of the strength of the relationship between two ETFs. It quantifies the degree to which prices of the two ETFs typically move together.

Here, correlation is measured over the past year with the Pearson correlation coefficient (Pearon’s r), which ranges from -1 to 1.

Using ETF correlations in portfolio and strategy construction

ETF correlations can help you create investing strategies and portfolios. Use them to:

  • Build a diversified portfolio from uncorrelated or inversely correlated ETFs with the aim of minimizing portfolio risk.
  • Compare correlated or related ETFs to find one with a lower expense ratio or higher trading volume.
  • Create an investing strategy that hedges an ETF with an uncorrelated or inversely correlated ETF.
